OSWEGO, NY – A Student Services EXPO 2010 will benefit Oswego High School students.
This unique opportunity was organized by the OHS guidance counselors and has brought together a variety of groups to inform students of a wide range of opportunities.
On May 10 from 6:30 to 9 p.m., the Oswego High School Ralph M. Faust Theatre for the Performing Arts will be the scene for the kick off to an evening of activities.
High School Counselor Marilee Taylor said, “This EXPO is open to all students in grades seven through twelve and we are inviting not only students, but also their families. This will be an opportunity to learn about academic, community and counseling services that promote students’ personal development from middle school to high school and beyond.â€
Taylor continued, “We counselors are very excited about this. We brainstormed how we could engage our families by delivering relevant information in a fresh, unique way. It’s never too early for students to think about their future, whether it’s college, military or work force.â€
In addition to concurrent 20-minute informational sessions on a variety of topics, there will be informational tables and refreshments all evening, located in the high school café, with information from various labor unions, military, and community agencies with resources available.
Among the various groups participating in EXPO 2010 are the military branches including the Marine Corps, Navy, Army, Air Force and Coast Guard as well as Integrative Counseling Services, Farnham Family Services, County of Oswego Council on Alcoholism and Addictions, Services to Aid Families, Oswego County Youth Bureau, Oswego Police Department, Oswego YMCA, ARISE, Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities, youth and family services, and various trade unions.
The EXPO format of concurrent sessions will provide attendees the chance to choose the presentations that are most personally useful. Choices include topics such as covering the college application process and adjustments in campus life, NCAA rules, internet safety, graduation requirements, and dealing with life’s stress.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to tour OHS following the sessions.
The sessions will include college admissions, writing college essays, graduation requirements, NCAA and high school athletic expectations, residential life for the first year of college and adjustment expectations, first generation of college students, forecasting your college financial aid, internet safety and dealing with life’s challenges.
High School Counselor Lisa Roman added “We counselors wanted to create the EXPO to address certain needs we have identified, such as improving the transition from middle school to high school as well as promoting more school unity. Opening the EXPO to grades 7-8 offers those students and parents an opportunity to see OHS while also learning about important hot topics such as internet safety and high school graduation requirements. They will also get the chance to meet the counselors and other students who will be volunteering or attending the sessions. It seems to be a win-win situation for everyone.â€
Taylor noted, “We really appreciate the support of Shane Stepien and the folks from Step One Creative as they generously donated the poster that is being used throughout the community to support and promote EXPO 2010. Their professional approach to what we want to provide to our students and families has greatly enhanced this worthwhile project.â€
In conclusion she said, “We welcome our community as we showcase our high school with an exciting, fresh program, one of many progressive best practices that happen at the high school every day. Building futures together is what it’s all about.â€
