Students Learn About Healthcare Opportunities During Oswego Hospital’s MASH Camp

OSWEGO, NY – A group of eighth and ninth graders got a close look at the healthcare field and the job opportunities it offers during the two-day Medical Academy of Science and Health (MASH) Camp held at the Oswego Hospital.

The 19 enrolled students toured the entire hospital and took part in many hands-on learning experiences.

Students from throughout Oswego County and beyond spent two days at Oswego Hospital learning about healthcare careers during the Medical Academy of Science and Health Camp. The group learned how to perform Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and took home a kit that included its own mannequin and DVD, so that the students could in turn teach family members CPR. They also took their own their own first aid kits.

Among the MASH Camp experiences that Dave Murray, of Oswego, will remember is the importance of hand washing.

As an experiment, the students put part of a washed hand in one Petri dish and then a portion of their other unwashed hand another Petri dish and let set overnight.

The second day of the camp they got to see the amount bacteria that had grown in the dish where their unwashed name had been placed.

Another student Sadie Adamy, of Fulton, enjoyed her second MASH camp experience and was excited to learn new things this year.

“I got to look at an ultrasound of a heart,” she said. “This year I got to see more in the imaging department.”

Just as the students found themselves having fun learning at MASH Camp, the hospital staff was just as enthusiastic about hosting the program.

“Our staff looks forward to this every year,” said Valerie Favata, Oswego Hospital’s associate administrator for nursing. “We’re already making plans for next year and have developed some new ideas that we think the students will find fun and interesting.”

MASH Camp is coordinated by the Central New York Area Health Education Center. CNYAHEC is a non-profit health workforce development organization located in Cortland that serves 14 counties in central New York including Oswego County.

Program sponsors include Oswego Health, CNYAHEC and Excellus BlueCross BlueShield.

The Oswego Health care system includes the Oswego Hospital, The Manor at Seneca Hill, a skilled nursing facility; Springside at Seneca Hill, a retirement living community; as well as numerous services across Oswego County.
