Sunrise Rotary Supports Literacy Volunteers

OSWEGO, NY – The members of the Oswego Sunrise Rotary Club presented a $200 check to Jane Murphy to support the work of Literacy Volunteers.

Some of the money was earned by the club collecting recyclable cans last spring.

Murphy, executive director of Oswego County Literacy Volunteers, was introduced by Rotarian Michelle McGrath.

Murphy updated the Oswego Sunrise Rotary on the current work of her organization.

40% of college students need some form help when they enter college.

Many people seeking help from Literacy Volunteers can read, but only at the third grade level.

These dismal facts have led to a poorly prepared workforce and one of the highest unemployment rates in New York State.

The budget for Literacy Volunteers has been cut by 32 % by New York State.

The need to support this vital agency continues to grow.

This summer, the Family Books Program is serving families in Oswego, Fulton, Hannibal, Phoenix, Central Square and Mexico.
