SUNY Students Hold Benefit Concert for Camp Hollis

OSWEGO – Nearly 100 individuals and organizations contributed to recreational programs at Camp Hollis last year through financial donations, in-kind assistance, and volunteering their time to Friends of Camp Hollis and the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau.

One of the more unusual fundraisers was a benefit concert on the SUNY Oswego campus, hosted by the SUNY Oswego Lifestyles Center. The “Instill Hope” event was organized by Jessica Leigh Ryan, a graduate assistant who wanted to create “an opportunity to get students on campus connected to the community.”

Several groups entertained at the benefit concert, including Missy Smith (QueenEarth), Rahsaan Eldridge (Wordslave), and SUNY Oswego student Bruce Pandolfo (AllOneVoice).

Students from a video journalism class covered the event and students from the Oswego High School also volunteered during the evening.

“The community has been very generous in its support of Camp Hollis, and the involvement of SUNY Oswego students broadens our partnerships with local residents,” said Kathleen Fenlon, director of the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau. “It was a delight to work with Jessica on this event. Jessica has been involved with youth programs in her home town, and she is aware of the kinds of programs that youth bureaus provide to help kids.”

Camp Hollis offers a residential camp experience for youth ages 8 to 14, complete with swimming, nature hikes, arts and crafts, games, evening campfires and many more activities. The camp overlooks Lake Ontario in the Town of Oswego and is operated by the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau.

Funds raised at “Instill Hope” were donated to Friends of Camp Hollis, and will be used for scholarships for children to attend camp whose family cannot cover the cost.
