FULTON – CNY Arts Center announces the premiere of The Hobbit, written by JRR Tolkein, November 10 at the Arts Center located at 11 River Glen Drive on the Cayuga College Fulton Campus.
The production runs through November 19 with six performances, Friday, Saturday, November 10 and 11 at 7:30 p.m., Sunday, November 12 at 3 p.m., Thursday and Saturday, November 16 and 18 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, November 19 at 3 p.m.
There is no Friday performance on the second weekend.
The adaptation, officially authorized by Professor Tolkein as dramatized by Patricia Gray, includes all the fictional characters of Tolkein’s popular novel come to life with heavy use of prosthetics, expansive costumes, wigs, beards, and headpieces.
A fantasy environment with many special effects includes the debut of a new scrim and special effects light package purchased with a grant from Oswego County Community Foundation.
Scenic Artist Karen Greenfield added hand-painted artistry capturing the many locations called for in the story on rotating scenery designed by director/designer Chad Lewis.
With many new techniques and effects planned, a new level of theatre artistry will debut along with this Central New York premiere.
The cast of youth and adults have been rehearsing since June to deliver skilled handling of medieval weaponry and developing voice and movement true to the non-traditional characters.
The production has offered learning opportunities for acting skills not commonly experienced with community theatre productions.
Lewis brings an extensive professional theatre background from the Atlanta Theatre community and other locations around the country. He is the new minister at the Oswego Church of Christ and director of the Fine Arts Program at Oswego Community Christian School.
He also served as stage manager and set designer for the recent production of Godspell at the Arts Center for which he has received a SALT nomination.
