OSWEGO, NY – Theorem paintings by Bert Leighton are now being exhibited in the art gallery of the Oswego Public Library.
This collection of 19 oil paintings on cloth is being shown in its entirety for the first time ever.
Theorem painting became popular in the early 1800s, and it was used often in the instruction of young ladies.
Some of these early examples are quite valuable, as viewers of the Antique Roadshow can attest.
Flowers and birds were often the subject matter and the example shown is one of the pieces which will be on display the rest of this month.
Other subjects are also used.
Mrs. Leighton is a graduate of Oswego State, and taught at Riley School.
Now retired, she is concentrating on her lifelong interest in art.
She has studied with national known teachers in Florida and South Carolina, as well as receiving instruction in workshops in the South and Northeast.
Locally, she was a founding member of the Oswego Art Guild in 1960.
She has also worked in water color, printmaking, collages, and her most recent exploration in using water color, using sun light to process images.
One of her works in fine art miniatures was displayed at the Smithsonian Institution in 2004 in the World Federation of Miniaturists Exhibition.
Her work will be on display until November 9.
Oswego Public Library is open 7 days a week starting at 10 a.m. Monday through Friday and at noon Saturday and Sunday.
The library closes at 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday.
