Oswego, NY – Sunrise Residential Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Oswego, recently opened a new three-room therapy suite within its renovated rehabilitation services department that will provide transition assistance for recovering patients.

The therapy suite, which consists of a kitchen, bathroom and bedroom, will enable physical therapy patients to practice cooking, wash dishes, and take a shower.

“We believe the new “apartment-like” setting will be a considerable asset to our rehab patients who are getting ready to leave our facility and return home,” said Joe Murabito, Sunrise Residential Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center Administrator. “This new rehabilitation component will be an instrumental tool in the recovery process of our patients, and will greatly build their confidence and ability to care for themselves,”

According to Sunrise Life Care Coordinator Greg Callen the patients can in essence do their physical therapy exercises in a home-like facility, which will in turn prepare them for their return home.

“The benefits that we are seeing within our therapy suite, as a result of the new apartment setting are tremendous,” he said. “It’s been a considerable addition to the therapy of our patients.”

Sharon Kirk, Sunrise Residential Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center Director of Recreation Therapy, agrees and has seen an immediate impact from the renovations within her department and other upgrades at the facility.

“The renovated facility and therapy suite, has allowed our department’s staff and patients to make significant progress in our treatment programs,” said Kirk. “We have developed a strong foundation with which we can build upon for the future of our department.”

The upgrades to the rehabilitation services department complement a variety of enhancements that have been implemented at the facility in recent months by the Sunrise team.  The facility continues its planning to further develop and enhance the day to day operations of the 40 year Oswego based facility.

According to Pam Aquitania, a licensed physical therapist and Sunrise Director of Rehabilitation Services, Sunrise residents may go to rehabilitative therapy for their individual recovery program twice a day… six days a week based on their individual clinical needs and preferences.

“I am confident our residents can receive no better rehabilitation therapy services anywhere.  Our goal is to get our short term care residents home as soon as they are ready and able,” she noted.

And that individual recovery programming combined with the improvements for residents and staff on a broader scale, are receiving high marks, according to Murabito.

“We’re receiving a lot of positive feedback on the new therapy suite and the many other physical and procedural changes we’ve made at Sunrise,” said Murabito. “Our patients, staff and community are directly benefitting from the facility upgrades, aesthetic improvements, and operational enhancements we continue to introduce.”

Dianne Ferris, a 58-year-old Oswego resident and recent Sunrise short term care resident, said the Sunrise facility enhancements, as well as their excellent patient care were instrumental in her recovery process.

“There was so much attention to detail,” said Ferris. “They really take an interest in the residents’ personal care. All of my needs were met to a degree that was more than I could have ever anticipated prior to coming to Sunrise.”

According to Ferris, all of the teams including: dietary, nursing, social work, skin care, physical therapy, maintenance, kitchen, and administration were part of making her experience “very positive”. “It was a very refreshing stay,” she said. “Everything was covered from A-Z and was just what you needed for rehab. Kudos to everyone.”

Initially hesitant to begin her treatment at Sunrise, Ferris quickly acclimated to the pleasant and helpful environment that the staff created for her, and actually became a volunteer of sorts during her stay.

“I would help some of the elderly patients with their nails and/or just became a friend for them to talk to,” she said.
According to Murabito, Ferris’ “volunteer role” went beyond assisting other residents at Sunrise. She was also instrumental in helping the facility better understand how best to use the new therapy suite. “It was wonderful to have Mrs. Ferris’ feedback and level of interest on the therapy suite project,” said Murabito. “To gather her viewpoints and enthusiasm during the process greatly benefitted the finished effort.”
