Time For Oswego School UPK Applications

OSWEGO, NY – The Oswego City School district has announced the anticipated openings for “Universal Pre-Kindergarten” for the 2011-2012 school year.

The program is designed for children who were born between Dec. 2, 2006 and Dec. 1, 2007 and is offered free of charge.

The children will be selected by lottery to participate and parents are reminded that the district does not supply transportation to and from school for UPK.

Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Cathleen Chamberlain said, “The goals of the program are to meet the individual needs of our four-year old children in the areas of social, academic, language, emotional and physical development.”

Continuing she said, “We anticipate sessions will be available at the Charles E. Riley, Frederick Leighton, Kingsford Park, Fitzhugh Park and Minetto elementary schools.”

As in the past, the program will be run for 180 days in accordance with the Oswego City School District calendar.

There will be a maximum of 18 students in each class which will be taught by a certified teacher and a teaching assistant.

An open house will be held in each building.

At Riley, Leighton and Kingsford Park the open house will be March 10 from 6-7 p.m.

That evening at Minetto a half-hour session will be conducted beginning at 6 p.m. while at Fitzhugh the open house will also be 30 minutes in length and commence at 7 p.m.

Chamberlain stressed, “The open hose is an opportunity to see the classroom and to learn more about the UPK program.”

Applications are available at all Oswego City School District elementary schools, the Office of Curriculum and Instruction on the first floor of the Education Center at 120 E. First St., as well as on line at www.oswego.org

Applications must be returned by March 25 to the Universal pre-K Office on the first floor of the Education Center.
