OSWEGO, NY – Who is that man riding a bicycle and carrying a dangerous looking tool? Why is he cutting benches of that tree?
It could be Phil MacArthur – a tree steward.
MacArthur visited Sunrise Rotary on Thursday to explain why he trims trees in Oswego.
He grew up on a tree farm.
He knows the value trees bring to a city.
Not only do trees add beauty to our city, but they also protect our streets, cool our homes in the summer and help keep us warm in the winter.
Trees increase the value of our homes.
Oswego plants 80 trees each year; 40 are lost due to poor care.
MacArthur is looking for volunteer tree stewards.
After completing a training course sponsored by the city of Oswego, tree stewards will be certified to work on public trees and shrubs and other beautification projects.
They will be under the supervision and direction of the DPW tree crew.
Some of the work will include removal of suckers at the base of tree, watering of new trees, weeding and mulching around the base of trees, pruning damaged limbs within reach on the ground and monitoring tree problems and suggesting sites for new trees.
