The United Way’s annual campaign serves as the organizations primary fundraiser as the campaign looks to raise money in support of the many human services programs that the United Way and its member agencies provide for those who live in Oswego County.

Open to the public, the campaign kick-off is an enlightening event that provides community members with the opportunity to learn more about the mission of the United Way and encourage them to support the 2008 / 2009 campaign.

“Packed with energy, our annual campaign kick-off promises to be a dynamic event that will highlight the many partnerships that the United Way has formed within the community, not only with our major partners such as Constellation, Energy, and Novelis, but also the many relationships we have formed with small businesses throughout Oswego County. The outstanding leadership and commitment to the community that our partners display helps to create a stronger community,” said Melanie Trexler, executive director of the United Way of Greater Oswego County.

“Those who attend will have the opportunity to share in our vision of improving lives by empowering our community. We look to inspire community members with an innovative and inspiring message that demonstrates how their involvement with our annual campaign can positively impact the human service needs in Oswego County and helping us reach our campaign goal of $800,000,” she said.

The United Way’s Annual Campaign Kick-Off will also celebrate the newly expanded partnership that the United Way has cultivated with SUNY Oswego.

“The enthusiasm we at SUNY Oswego have for the United Way is epitomized by the women’s ice hockey team and Coach Diane Dillon. The Lakers have supported the United Way through their ‘Score for Success’ campaign and by volunteering for fundraisers,” said SUNY Oswego President Deborah F. Stanley. “College employees and students each year pitch in to help the United Way serve people in need in our community through their donations and volunteer efforts.”

To highlight the SUNY partnership the event will feature a special appearance by the SUNY Oswego Women’s Hockey Team with head coach, Diane Dillon who will serve as one of the guest speakers.

Dillon is excited about the new hockey season and honored to be part of the United Way’s Annual Campaign.

“The Oswego State women’s ice hockey program is once again proud to be part of the Untied Way campaign for greater Oswego County. Being a student athlete at SUNY Oswego is so much more than just playing a sport, it’s also about learning to be upstanding members of our communities and helping those in need when we can. Our partnership with the United Way has given the Lakers a wonderful opportunity to give back to the community who welcomes us, the community who supports us and cheers us on, and most importantly to the community that is SUNY Oswego’s home. Making the world a better place for all of us is a never-ending battle, and the United Way has never backed down from the challenge. The Oswego State women’s ice hockey team is honored to help the United Way campaign and we will do our best this year to make it a successful one,” said Dillon.

“I find it very motivating to once again have Diane and the SUNY Oswego women’s hockey team lending their support to this year’s campaign,” said Trexler. “It’s very encouraging to see our young people recognize the importance of the United Way’s campaign and the impact that the United Way has had on the quality of life in Oswego County. It is a perfect example of the Live United concept.  It really does take a village to successfully achieve goals for the common good. We are all connected. When you reach out and help someone in need that action has an effect that reverberates throughout the community. Your support of the United Way not only brings comfort to those in need, it helps inspire others to lend their support to the United Way and ultimately enables us and our member agencies to serve even more families and individuals.”

“We hope to impress upon the community that their support matters and help them gain a better understanding of what it is to Live United by showing them the positive impact that their donations have on their friends and neighbors right here in Oswego County. By supporting our annual campaign they are helping the United Way and our member agencies improve the quality of life for everyone in Oswego County,” added Trexler.

The cost to attend the United Way Campaign Kick-Off Breakfast is $15.
