OSWEGO, NY – Spring has arrived. Birds are singing, trees are budding, the snow is melting.
It’s a great time to shake off the cabin fever, enjoy the sunshine, get outside, and join other area residents who are out in the evenings…investigating possible hauntings and other strange aspects of the paranormal.
The Oswego Paranormal Research Society (TOPRS) is an opportunity for anyone who has an interest in the emerging science of parapsychology to actively participate in research and investigating, even if you have no experience, or equipment to do so, membership is free.
TOPRS has plenty of room for new members and researchers to join in on events, investigations and ghost walks to benefit the Oswego County and city of Oswego which is by far one of the most haunted small cities in New York State.
Founded in October of 2009, TOPRS seeks to validate possibly haunted locations and make available to paranormal researchers and historical researchers documented cases of hauntings, Bigfoot sightings, UFO sightings and more throughout Oswego County and surrounding areas.
Much has been done by several groups and individuals like the former and much beloved City Historian Rosemary Nesbitt who passed away last year.
There is much more to be recorded, folk tales, family ghosts and more.
Surprisingly, now that the paranormal and ghost hunting has become much more mainstream people are not so afraid of being shunned for telling of strange occurrences they have experienced.
Oswego itself is uniquely and centrally located between Rome/Utica, Syracuse and Rochester so it’s a great jumping off point for visitors who want to take full advantage of the wonderful locations to tour these cites as well.
Fort Ontario is a well liked site for investigators due to its close proximity to the city, plus it is easily within 9 other well documented haunted locations in the city area.
It is only a small part of strange reports that have surfaced since our organization has started.
Anyone who would like to start their own team is encouraged to join.
We will be visiting throughout the area in the coming months to talk to the public on behalf of historical societies and fraternal organizations for fundraisers and to answer questions about our research.
Recently, TOPRS joined 1,000 other concerned citizens regarding the possible closure of Fort Ontario, an historical landmark of special significance having been a military fortification dating back to before the Revolutionary War and having been part of the War of 1812, and in use up to World War II … civic duty and volunteering is stressed with our members so that whenever there is a need, our members can and do participate.
