Workshops To Address Bullying

OSWEGO, NY – Children and parents will gain a better perspective on the problem of bullying when Catholic Charities of Oswego County hosts two informative workshops on bullying.

On Aug. 3, a workshop entitled “Not Cool to be Cruel” will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. in the Community Center at Hamilton Homes.

The workshop, which is open to students in grade K through 12, will consist of a video presentation followed by a discussion on topics such as school violence, bullying, anger management and bullying on the bus.

The workshop will conclude with an overview of what to do if you are bullied.

Participants will also receive information on social skills that may prevent bullying.

On Aug. 4, a second workshop on bullying will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Community Center at Hamilton Homes.

Open to all parents and caregivers residing at Hamilton Homes, the workshop will address the following topics in regards to bullying: social skills for children in preventing bullying, cyber-bullying, what parents can do, and how parents can help children understand what they should do if they are bullied.

Jonathan Gilmore, coordinator for Catholic Charities’ Kinship Program, will facilitate the workshops and is looking forward to helping children and their parents / caregivers productively deal with the problem of bullying.

“As the prevalence of bullying increases we felt that it was necessary for us to develop a workshop that will help educate youth and their parents about the issues associated with bullying. While these first workshops are for youth who participate in the free breakfast and free lunch program at Hamilton Homes as well as parents / caregivers who reside at Hamilton Homes, we are looking into scheduling similar workshops so that we may reach as many children and parents / caregivers as possible,” he said.

To register for the either workshop, call 343-9683.
