Zonta Club of Oswego Announces 2024 Scholarship Recipients

OSWEGO – The Zonta Club of Oswego is pleased to announce three scholarship recipients for 2024. The Zonta Club of Oswego is dedicated to advancing the status of women, most notably through education. Zonta Club of Oswego is part of Zonta International, a leading global organization of professionals empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy.

Zonta International envisions a world in which women’s rights are recognized as human rights and every woman is able to achieve her full potential. In such a world, women have access to all resources and are represented in decision-making positions on an equal basis with men. In such a world, no woman lives in fear of violence.
A testament to the Zonta Club of Oswego’s mission in action can be found in these scholarships that are awarded annually.

The 2024 recipient of the Zonta Club of Oswego Young Women in Public Affairs Scholarship is Moira Spiegel. The Young Women in Public Affairs Scholarship recognizes young women who participate in public and community life through volunteer service and leadership and exhibit a commitment to the advancement of the status of women.

Moira is a 2024 graduate of Oswego High School. As a student, she was involved with National Honor Society, Student Council, Travel Club where she was the treasurer, Outdoor Adventure Club and on the Prom Committee.

In her community, Moira spent many hours volunteering helping build a little Library in front of her former elementary school, painting a checkerboard on a former basketball court at a local park, hosting Bingo for the elderly and helping children complete STEM projects in the local Public Library.

As a longtime member of Girl Scouts, Moira learned about powerful women and what they have done for their communities and how to become a better advocate.

She plans on attending Nazareth University in the fall and will be majoring in Legal studies, with an ultimate goal of becoming a Family Law Attorney.

This year there were two recipients of the High School Student Scholarship, awarded to an outstanding female high school senior who has been accepted into a formal higher education program, leading to an undergraduate associate or bachelor degree. The first recipient of the Zonta Club of Oswego 2024 High School Scholarship is Julianna Ricker.

Julianna is a 2024 graduate of Public High School. In high school, some of Julianna’s many activities included Robotics Club, French Club, French Honor Society, National Honor Society, Math Honor Society, Student Council and Semi-Formal Planning Committee.

Outside of school, Julianna was involved on the Youth Advisory Council, Governors Youth Council, DEI Steering Committee, American Red Cross Blood drive, Christmas in Oswego and both the McFee and MAVES Ambulance services.

Julianna plans to attend SUNY Plattsburgh in the fall to study Medical Technology and Chemistry as part of the Honors College, with a career goal of going to Medical School for Emergency Medicine or Trauma Surgery. She is already a certified lifeguard and EMT and has accumulated nearly 60 college credits in furtherance of her educational goals.

The second 2024 recipient of the Zonta Club of Oswego High School Scholarship is Ciara Orr.

Ciara is a 2024 graduate of G. Ray Bodley High School. Ciara spent her senior year in the BOCES New Vision program with a focus on the law field. Some of Ciara’s activities in high school include Student Government Class Treasurer for four years, National Honor Society, Dance, HOPE (Helping Other People Everywhere) club, Debate club, Mentoring and Youth Advisory Council. Ciara has received numerous academic awards throughout her high school career.

Outside of school, Ciara was actively involved in volunteer service tutoring, working as a volunteer with Fulton Parks & Recreation, volunteering at American Red Cross Blood Drives, NECAP Albany Youth Summit and Fulton Youth Bureau Christmas Party.

Ciara will be attending the School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University in the fall. She plans to attend law school to pursue a Juris Doctor Degree, with an ultimate goal of becoming a District Attorney.
