Constellation Energy Nuclear Group and Entergy to Replace Emergency Siren System

SCRIBA, NY – Constellation Energy Nuclear Group, owner and operator of Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station, and Entergy Nuclear, owner and operator of James A. FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant, will be upgrading the public warning system that CENG operates and that serves Oswego County’s nuclear facilities.

The project includes replacing 37 existing sirens and installation of two new sirens as well as battery back-up power in the 10-mile radius around the nuclear facilities.

These new sirens represent a significant investment in the local community and the emergency preparedness program.

As operators of nuclear energy facilities, both CENG and Entergy Nuclear are committed to protecting the health and safety of the public and employees.

The warning sirens are one of several methods used by county emergency management authorities to provide notification of emergencies.

The sirens are not a signal to evacuate, but that residents should tune to the local emergency alert broadcast station.

The new sirens will sound at a volume similar to the old ones and the new warning system is expected to be tested the same number of times per year as the old system.

This project will involve a total investment of more than $1.5 million.
