Cortland Overpowers Laker Softball in Twinbill

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Nationally-ranked Cortland proved to be too much for the Oswego State softball team, as the Red Dragons (26-4, 10-0) posted 7-1 and 10-2 wins over the Lakers (9-14, 4-6 SUNYAC) Saturday afternoon.

Cortland scored two runs right away in the first inning when Jessica Harman’s hit into left field was inches from clearing the fence, but bounced off the top of it back into play to drive in two runners. The lead grew to 3-0 in the second inning when Meaghan Kohler led off the frame with a solo shot to right center.

The Red Dragons added four more runs in the top of the third. After Abby Martin walked, Cassie Kardias hit a two-run home run to straight away center. Later in the stanza, Tara Donnino hit a single into center field to bring around Nancy Newell and Kayla Lynch to make the score 7-0.

Oswego State ended the shutout bid in the bottom of the fifth when Sammie Schroeter (So., Schenectady, N.Y.) ripped a double to score Brittany Carbacio (Sr., Pennellville, N.Y.).

Ashley Snyder (Jr., Pulaski, N.Y.) tossed two innings, giving up five runs on six hits to pick up the loss. Sarah Thayer was effective in relief over the final five innings, as she scattered four hits for two unearned runs to go along with three strikeouts and four walks.

Game two started in a similar fashion with Harman driving in the first run courtesy of a sacrifice fly in the first inning.

The Red Dragons rattled off six straight hits to start the second inning, including a two-run double by Lorraine Stoddard and was capped off by a two-run homer from Kardias to put Cortland ahead 7-0.

Cortland tacked on two more runs in the third after an Abby Martin RBI single and a bases-loaded defensive error plating a run.

Oswego State got on the board in a big way in the fourth when Brooke Radley (Jr., Pulaski, N.Y.) hit a two-run home run to deep right field after Sue Schoff (Jr., Little Falls, N.Y.) laced a double down the left field line with two outs.

The Red Dragons capitalized on a pair of Laker errors in the top of the fifth to take a 10-2 lead. Oswego State’s Shannon Baker (Sr., Hannibal, N.Y.) hit a single to keep the team alive, but the next batter hit a fly ball to left field to end the game.

Sarah Thayer (Jr., Winthrop, N.Y.) gave up four runs on five hits over the course of one inning to suffer the loss. Danielle Groat (Fr., Ballston Spa, N.Y.) surrendered three runs on three hits during the second without recording an out, while Snyder finished the final four innings with three runs, one of which was earned, on three hits.

Four Red Dragon pitchers worked toward the victory, as Abby Martin earned the win over two innings.
