Donath Victorious In Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints At Brewerton Speedway; Cook, Isabell Jr. And Powelczyk Also Pick Up Wins

By Dave Medler

BREWERTON, NY  – Former speedway Modified driver Shawn Donath put on a late race driving exhibition Friday night at the Brewerton Speedway in winning the exciting 25 lap Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints A-Main.

Donath took advantage of a late caution with the three laps to go using a wicked slide job on leader Chuck Hebing on lap 24 to pick up the popular win in front of the home crowd.

Other winners on Schneider Packaging night were, Kevan Cook, Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modifieds, Jeff Isabell Jr., Beaver River Distribution Mod Lites and Chuck Powelczyk, Anchor Bar & Grill Four Cylinder Super Stocks.

Tyler Rand jumped out to the early advantage leading the early going of the 25 lap Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints A-Main. On lap 3 a quick yellow would fly to tighten up the field. On the restart, Chuck Hebing would take advantage as he blasted into the lead on lap 4.

With 5 laps showing on the scoring tower, Hebing still set the pace out front, as Rand, Sammy Reakes IV, Larry Wight and Shawn Donath gave chase.

On lap 10, Hebing held about a ten car length advantage over Wight. Behind the top-two, Donath, Jason Barney and Reakes battled for top-five spots.

At the halfway point, Hebing was still setting a quick pace out front. Wight and Donath fought for second, with Barney and Reakes still showing in the top-five.

On lap 17, Hebing, when trying to put Tommy Wickham a lap down, the two made contact on the front straight sending Wickham into a series of violent flips landing in turn one. Wickham got out of car unharmed.

On the side-by-side restart, Hebing and Wight made contact, sending Wight into the front straightaway wall ending Wight’s shot at the win.

A quick yellow would fly on lap 22, giving Donath, Reakes, Barney and Steve Poirier one last shot at Hebing and the win.

When the green came back out, Donath was a man on a mission. On lap 23, Donath tried a slide job on Hebing in turns three and four, but couldn’t make it stick. Donath didn’t lose much momentum as he was able to keep pace with Hebing. The next lap, Donath once again threw it hard into three and four on the bottom, this time the move stuck as he was able to slide up in front of Hebing to be the new leader on lap 24.

On the final lap Hebing couldn’t mount a final charge as Donath was the first under the checkers over Hebing.. Steve Poirier, Sam Reakes IV and Lance Yonge finished third through fifth.

South Onondaga NY’s Shawn Donath talked about his big win over Chuck Hebing.

“Chuck (Hebing) is the king of the slide jobs. To pass him like that right at the end is a career highlight. He’s one of the toughest guys in this club. He races you clean and hard the whole time. It was an awesome night for this whole Doug Emery Motorsports Team.”

In the 20 lap Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modified feature, point’s leader Kevan Cook took the lead on lap 8 as he looked to run away and hide. Over the second half of the feature, Mike Smith who made the long tow from Arkport, NY, threw everything he had at Cook, but came up short at the finish. With his win Cook has a six point lead over Ryan Scott with two points races left to decide the 2012 track champion.

Jeff Isabell Jr. continued his winning ways in the Beaver River Distribution Mod Lites. Isabell took the lead just before halfway of the 20 lap feature and never looked back for his fourth Brewerton Speedway win in the 2012 season. Point’s leader Mike Mullen, Joe Isabell, Tim Devendorf and Joe Garafolo chased Isabell across the line.

Chuck Powelczyk put yet another win in the record books in the 15 lap Anchor Bar & Grill Four Cylinder Super Stock feature. Aron Backus, Jessica Redhead, Zak Petrie and Lorraine Powelczyk finished second through fifth.
