The Amelia Piano Trio will open SUNY Oswego’s Ke-Nekt Chamber Music Series at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, in the Sheldon Hall ballroom.
The trio — violinist Anthea Kreston, cellist Jason Duckles and pianist Rieko Aizawa — came together in 1999 and acquired Isaac Stern as a mentor after participating in the legendary violinist’s Chamber Music Workshop at Carnegie Hall in 2000.
The Amelia Piano Trio was selected by National Public Radio to be its Young Ensemble in Residence in 2003, where the group performed 15 works in a weeklong live event. The trio has also earned an ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming.
Amelia’s music ranges from the modern work of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Harbison to the classic pieces of Beethoven. After their commissioned premiere of Daron Hagen’s “Orpheus and Eurydice,” the Chicago Tribune said of the trio: “Kreston, Duckles and Aizawa make a superb team, and together they dug into the piece with a gusto and polish that did the piece proud.”
The trio’s members are professors at the Hartt School of Music and Connecticut College and are actively involved in arts education. They also teach high school and college-aged students the art of chamber music at the Green Lake Chamber Music Camp.
The group will discuss its style and work at 7 p.m. before the performance on Sept. 17.
Tickets to the concert cost $15 ($10 for senior citizens and students, $5 for SUNY Oswego students).
