The Ontario Center for Performing Arts continues its fall season of Oswego Music Hall performances by welcoming Sara Milonovich and DaisyCutter, live at 8 pm, Saturday, October 18, in the McCrobie Civic Center, 41 Lake Street, Oswego.
Sara is an award-winning fiddler, singer, and tunesmith who has been performing various roots, bluegrass, Celtic, and Appalachian music since she was 4 years old. She joined The Adirondack Fiddlers at age seven, and at age twelve released her first cassette of traditional fiddle tunes. She has performed with various classical ensembles throughout New York State, including the Empire State Youth and Repertory Orchestras, several string quartets, and with members of the Albany, Glens Falls, and Schenectady Symphonies. In 1998 she released the CD “Mrs. Ippy Fiddle”, under the name Sara Miles (as her last name was often mispronounced), which was a nominated semifinalist for the 1999 Grammy awards. She spent the past few years with The Cathie Ryan Band, and From 1999 – 2002 she toured the US and Ireland as a member of the Celtic/bluegrass/roots band The McKrells. She has recorded with numerous artists, and both her fiddle and voice can be heard on the forthcoming Richard Shindell CD “South of Delia.”
Sara’s latest collaboration is DaisyCutter; a new band of adventurous luminaries that’s been described as “acoustic and electric, agnostic and eclectic”, but it’s much more than that, and trickier to describe – it’s roots-rock, oldtime-newgrass, worldbeat with Celtic and other flavors… it’s alt-folk, alt-country, alt-pop… simply “alt-all”.
Driven by the rhythm section of world-music stalwarts Greg Anderson (Eileen Ivers, Whirligig) on guitar, Leo Traversa (Steve Kimock, Tania Maria) on bass, and Ben Wittman (Paul Simon, Paula Cole) on percussion, it’s an explosion of music with as many colors and flavors as the melting pot that is New York – and not just the city, but the countryside too – a kind of “Downtown Upstate” band – rural roots with an urban edge. It’s a band with one foot firmly planted in the soil of roots and traditional music, while the other kicks madly in a thousand different directions at once! Admission to this show is payable at the door – $8 for Music Hall members and $12 for non-members. Children under age 12 are half-price and under five are free. The Music Hall is an all-volunteer, family-friendly venue featuring primarily folk and acoustic music. The atmosphere is intimate with candle-lit tables surrounding a small stage.
