Owl Prowl
Saturday January 10 at 7pm
Nesting season has begun for the great horned owls. Join Naturalist Jim D’Angelo for an indoor introduction to the great-horned owl and other New York State owls. Then we will venture out on an owl prowl looking and listening for the nocturnal kings of the sky. Last year a pair of great-horned owls nested an old great blue heron nest within the rookery, so we know that they can be in the area. The program is free and open to the public; please remember to dress for the weather.
Tracks and Traces
Saturday January 16 at 1pm
What wildlife is moving about the Sterling Nature Center or your back yard? Winter is the perfect season to answer this question using the tracks and traces wildlife leaves behind to identify them. Join interpretive naturalist Jim D’Angelo for an indoor presentation followed by a hike in search of wildlife signs. The program is free and open to the public.
Cayuga Naturally 2010 Photo Contest
We are holding this contest again this year since Cayuga County is a diverse and wonderful place filled with nature’s best from the shore of Lake Ontario to the heart of the Finger Lakes. Capture your favorite place for hiking, canoeing, fishing, hunting or other outdoor activity as well as the beauty of the streams, lakes, trees, wildflowers, birds, animals and other aspects of nature. All photos must be taken within Cayuga County and be of nature related subjects. For official entry form send a stamped self-addressed envelope to: SNC Photo, PO Box 216 Sterling NY, 13156. Entries due by October 7, 2010.
Winter Fun Day

Come and join us for some winter fun at the Sterling Nature Center
Do you want to learn how to cross-country ski this winter?
Learn the basics of cross-country skiing with June Oulette. We have a limited number of skis and sizes available so please bring your own if you have them.
Build a snow cave or Quinzhee with Shirley Peron. In addition to the construction, participants will observe the snow layers within the snow pack, please bring a snow shovel and dress properly for winter weather.
For the young and young at heart Luther Robison will be at the sledding hill by the pavilion. If you do not have your own sled we will have a few to share.
After having some Winter Fun go inside to get warm, view the exhibits, and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate.
Discovering Nature’s Winter Secrets

How does the chickadee survive the cold windy winter? What insects are still active? Join Naturalist Jim D’Angelo for a look into the secrets of winter. There will be an indoor presentation followed by a winter hike to uncover the many fascinating secrets of winter. The program is free and open to the public.
