SUNY Oswego recently opened its summer exhibition “Visual Journals: Recent Work by Amy Bartell, Cynthia Clabough, Paul Pearce, Cara Brewer Thompson. The public is invited to a reception to meet the artists on Thursday, September 18, 2008, 5:00-8:00 pm. Refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public.
The fall exhibition, which continues through January 18, 2009 features recent work by SUNY Oswego Art department faculty. This exhibition is the first in a series of ongoing exhibitions planned by the Art department for the Metro Center. With a significant exhibition space a part of the Metro Center, SUNY Oswego now has the opportunity to participate in ‘Third Thursday’ and add to the growing arts and culture scene in Syracuse. “This is an exciting development and offers our faculty and students a chance to have their work seen by a wider audience,” noted Cynthia Clabough, chair of the art department.
Active participants in the now defunct Altered Space Gallery, Pearce, Clabough, Bartell, and Thompson welcomed the opportunity to have their work come together again. The work in this exhibition revolves around the central theme of creating visual journals. Working in a range of mediums and styles, each artist is connected through their approach to content. Long involved in documentary types of projects, each artist has an active history of creating work that records their thoughts and observations. In selecting work for this exhibition, “each artist understood that, whether representational, abstracted, or non-objective, the purpose was to choose work that illustrated our internalized discourse or thoughtful visual meanderings” explained Amy E. Bartell.
During the opening reception, the artist in the exhibition will be available to talk with interested people about the work.
All SUNY Oswego Metro Center exhibitions are free and open to the public. Hours are Tuesday through Thursday, 9 am to 8 pm; Friday 9 am to 4 pm. For additional information about this exhibition call the Art Department at 312-211.
