Errors Hurt Oswego State Volleyball Team

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State volleyball team (10-11) was never able to get into rhythm on Dig Pink night, as the Lakers suffered a 3-1 loss (13-25, 25-20, 20-25, 15-25) to Hilbert (13-6) Wednesday night.

In support of breast cancer awareness month, Oswego State collected donations at the door and held a raffle for several items with proceeds going to the Side-Out Foundation to assist breast cancer research.

After the first set was tied at eight, the Hawks embarked on an 11-2 run to take control of the stanza en route to a 25-13 win.

The second set started out in a similar fashion and continued to go back-and-forth until the score was even at 19. Sabrina Sutton (Jr., Fulton, N.Y.) registered a kill followed by a Morgan Lavner (Jr., Oswego, N.Y.) service ace to create some distance between the teams.

Hilbert won the next point on a kill by Chelsea Reischuck, but Oswego State recorded the final four points after a pair of Hawk hitting errors and kills from Chelsea Crump (Sr., Sandy Creek, N.Y.) and Kara Michelsen (So., Lake View, N.Y.).

In the pivotal third frame and tied in the late stages, Hilbert closed out the set by winning five of the final six points to take a 2-1 lead.

Oswego State trailed 6-4 in the fourth set, but a 14-5 Hawk scoring streak gave Hilbert a commanding lead. The visitors closed out the match after a Laker hitting error, which was the 35th of the match.

Middle blockers Stephanie Bailey (So., Scotia, N.Y.) and Chelsea Crump led the Laker offense with seven kills each, while Michelsen ended with 17 assists. Sabrina Sutton added nine digs as well. The Hilbert attack was led by Chelsea Reischuck, who put away 11 kills. Shannon Memminger handed out 24 assists, while Allegra Johnson tallied 13 digs.

The volleyball program would like to thank the following Oswego businesses for contributing to the raffle: Pizza Hut, Burger King, Valti Graphics, Ponderosa, Bistro 197, the Campus Store, Vona’s, Tanning Bed, and Port City Café and Bakery.
