OSWEGO – When Neil Simon picked the name for his play about a village cursed by stupidity, he must have known how humorous it would be just to talk about the play.
The Oswego Players, Inc. are now in the midst of rehearsals for “Fools” and finding laughs not only in the script but in the title as well.
When the Players talk about the play, it’s, “Are the fools rehearsing tonight?” “Are the fools marching in the Independence Day Parade?” “Do the fools know their lines?”
Sherri Metz has assembled a cast of seasoned actors who bring the Neil Simon comedy to life.
Set in the past, the play tells of a small Ukranian village that has been cursed for 200 years with a bad case of stupidity.
A young teacher, played by Matthew Fleming, arrives, falls in love and tries to break the curse.
If he is unable to break the curse, he himself will be cursed with stupidity.
Wit and lively, the play is perfect summer fare.
The cast includes beside Fleming, Beverly Murtha, Michael Nupuf, Olivia Delorenzo, Marsha Preston, Scott Bandla, Tammy Thompson, Tim O’Connor, Steve Standish and Don DelPriore.
“Fools” will be presented in the Frances Marion Brown Theater in the Oswego Civic Arts Center on July 8, 9, 15, 16 at 8 p.m. and on July 17 at 2 p.m.
