In September of 2006 Granby Elementary School welcomed a new class of kindergarten students.
Teachers and staff members watched the kindergarteners grow and mature and saw first-hand the excitement on each student’s face as they solved a difficult math problem, met their favorite author, played their very first instrument, performed in a concert, and celebrated on the school’s new playground.
Now, seven years later, the school is saying good-bye and good luck to those same students as they end their final year in the elementary school as sixth grade students and begin a new chapter in the fall as seventh grade students at the Fulton Junior High School.
To commemorate this milestone the school and building Principal Heather Perry hosted a promotion ceremony the last week of the school year in the sixth grade students’ honor.
She asked each student during the ceremony to stop and reflect on the last seven years and said, “Remember how hard you’ve worked. What it felt like to learn something new. This is only the beginning for you.”
Music teachers Stephany Collins and Kelly Evans kicked-off the awards portion of the ceremony by recognizing all of Granby’s performing arts students. Chorus, orchestra, and band members including those selected for All-County were asked to stand and given a special round of applause.
Members of the school’s safety patrol were recognized, Granby character awards were presented, and awards from President Barack Obama were distributed.
Earning the President’s Academic Excellence Award for continuous high academic achievement was students: Dani Avery, Nicholas Brown, Jenna Hood, Kelsey Rosenbarker, Erin Waloven, Kelly Caza, Abigail Cuyler, Cory Dexter, Cloe Gagnon, Haylee Rivera, Ean Stevenson, Hayley Vann, and Camille Stevenson.
The President’s Award for Academic Achievement, which recognizes students that show outstanding educational growth and improvement in their academic subjects, was awarded to: Madison Archer, Damion Chevier, Jacob Hughes, Michael Newton, Elisabeth Russell, Kayla Ryder, Aleigha Colon, Korbin Hyde, Jacob Parkhurst, Brooke Shuster, Wendy Burch, Kaitlyn Crandall, Gage Doyle, Abigail Everts, Zachary Hobby, and Jason Knopp.
In recognition of his academic achievement, school involvement, and his love of learning, people and the community, sixth grader Ean Stevenson was presented with Robert and Alice Jonas Award.
The Triple “C” Award was presented to Madison Archer and Jenna Hood. This award recognizes role model students for demonstrating outstanding character, courage, and commitment to their education.
The Comptroller’s Achievement Award was presented to Zachary Hobby and Camille Stevenson for demonstrating academic leadership at Granby.
Rounding out the ceremony was the presentation of promotion certificates to all sixth grade students by teachers Mrs. Bertrand, Mrs. Besio, Mr. Dorsey, and Mr. McNamara.
