Hannibal’s Burridge Scores 11 in Laker Men’s Basketball Win

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men’s basketball team had four players reach double figures as they staved off a strong second-half York College comeback bid to survive 64-61 Friday night in the opening round of the Max Ziel Basketball Classic. The win moved the Lakers to 1-0, while the loss dropped York to 0-3.

Chris Gilkes led Oswego State in scoring and rebounding as he posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Hannibal’s Chad Burridge chipped in 11 points, four rebounds and four steals, and Jose Uribe and Kevin Kucel# each added 10 points. Sean Michele dished out a game-high six assists.

The Lakers held a 29-13 lead with five minutes remaining in the first half before the Cardinals closed the gap to 34-25 by halftime. York began the second half on a 23-9 run to take a five point lead with 11 minutes remaining after a Marcel Esonwune lay-up.

Uribe and Kucel combined for 10 points on a 13-0 Laker run to give the Lakers an eight-point cushion. Oswego State battled back and forth with York in the last five minutes of the game, converting all six free throw attempts in the home stretch to seal the victory.

Laker guard Brian Gebhardt tied up Holley with 11 seconds left, giving possession back to Oswego State. Michele converted two free throws to push the lead to three on the ensuing possession. A last-second chance by Holley fell short, giving the Lakers their first win of the season.

The Cardinals received huge contributions from Esonwune and William Holley with 20 and 21 points, respectively. Esonwune also nabbed a game-high 16 rebounds, and is two rebounds short of the 1,000-rebound plateau.

Oswego State returns to action as it hosts Keystone College Saturday night at 6 p.m. York will face Brockport Saturday at 2 p.m.
