FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Oswego State women’s soccer team was handed its first loss of the 2016 campaign 3-2 to the University of Mount Union on Friday afternoon in the opening game of the Fredonia Blue Devils/Clarion Hotel Classic.
Oswego’s loss drops its overall record to 1-1 while the Purple Raiders advance to 2-1.
Mary Morrison scored her team leading second goal of the season at 10:57 of the first half to give the Lakers the contest’s first tally. The senior’s goal followed an Oswego corner kick, with Morrison settling a loose ball and finding the net.
Less than two minutes later, Mount Union recorded the equalizer and the 1-1 tie would stand all the way to halftime.
After the break, the Purple Raiders grabbed their first lead of the game at 52:10. This time Oswego was the squad that came from behind to knot the score.
At 64:06, sophomore Chloe Lonergan capitalized on a free kick, sending in a shot that took a sizeable bounce over the keeper and into the goal.
Just over 10 minutes later, Mount Union recaptured the edge on the Lakers, scoring on a rebound off a free kick of its own.
Oswego put one more shot on-goal in the final 16 minutes, but Morrison’s attempt was saved in the 85th minute.
In 90 minutes between the pipes, Melissa Siegfried made two stops for the Lakers.
The Lakers have a change to jump right back into the win column with a 1:30 p.m. tilt on Saturday with Baldwin Wallace in the team’s final game of the tournament.
