Laker Softball Drops Pair To Plattsburgh

OSWEGO, N.Y. – In a low-scoring affair, the Oswego State softball team (10-19, 4-8 SUNYAC) did not produce the timely hits when they were needed as the Lakers fell 2-1 and 5-0 to Plattsburgh on Friday. Sarah Thayer (Jr., Winthrop, N.Y.) allowed just two hits in game one to suffer the loss, while two of the four Cardinal (22-7, 11-3) hits in the nightcap were home runs.

Plattsburgh took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one when Brittany Marshall scored on a ground out to the shortstop after stealing second and third base following a lead-off walk to start the game.

A Marshall walk and stolen to start the third resulted in the second Cardinal run after the Lakers misplayed a bunt.

Brooke Radley (Jr., Pulaski, N.Y.) led an Oswego State rally in the bottom of the fifth when she laced a triple down the right field line. Sue Schoff (Jr., Little Falls, N.Y.) drove Radley in with a single to right center field.

Later in the inning, the Lakers had runners on second and third with two outs, but the charge ended with a pop fly to the catcher in foul territory.

Oswego State went down in order in the sixth and seventh innings to end the game.

Thayer took the loss with a stat line of two hits, two runs, six strikeouts and eight walks. Heather Loughran picked up the win after scattering five hits over seven innings of work.

Plattsburgh turned another walk into a run during the second inning of the nightcap when Dana Mandery doubled down the left field line following an Erin Florkiewicz walk and a ground out advanced Florkiewicz to second base.

Schoff led off the second with a double that went to the fence in right center field, but she was stranded at third after a pair of Oswego State strikeouts.

Radley started the Laker half of the fourth inning with a double to the gap in right field. She advanced to third after Schoff executed a sacrifice bunt, but another strikeout and a ground ball to the first baseman ended the threat.

Plattsburgh built a 3-0 lead in the fifth when Marshall blasted a two-run home run into left center field. The Cardinals led off the sixth with a solo shot by Brianna Clarke to make the score 4-0.

Dee Apps (So., Camillus, N.Y.) tried to get something started in the sixth after hitting a single through the left side of the infield, but the next three Laker batters struck out.

Plattsburgh tacked on another run in the seventh to make the final score 5-0.

Danielle Groat (Fr., Ballston Spa, N.Y.) was the hard-luck loser after giving up one run in the first two innings. Ashley Snyder (Jr., Pulaski, N.Y.) allowed three runs on three hits in the middle three innings before Thayer worked the final two innings.

Cardinal Ashley Marshall recorded 13 strikeouts and two walks over the seven-inning game.

The Lakers host Potsdam on Saturday at noon for doubleheader action. Following the games, Oswego State will be honoring its two seniors.
