ITHACA, N.Y. – Michael Gentilcore (Jr., Rochester, N.Y.) was crowned champion at 133 pounds to help the Oswego State wrestling team place fifth after the Lakers posted 98.5 points at the 29th Annual Ithaca Invitational on Saturday.
Johnson & Wales won the team title with 181 points.
Gentilcore registered pins in 2:04 and 2:46 during the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, respectively, before defeating teammate Abubakarr Sow (Fr., Brooklyn, N.Y.), 8-3, in the final bout. Sow earned his spot in the finals by pinning Ithaca’s Marvin Amazan in 4:42 during the quarterfinals followed by a medical forfeit by his opponent in the semifinals.
At 165 pounds, Blake Fisher (Sr., Seaford, N.Y.) won his quarterfinal bout, 6-2, before pinning Tyler Bruce from Niagara Community College in 4:42 during the semifinal round. In the final match, Fisher lost to Johnson & Wales’ Frank Marotti, 8-4.
Omar Santiago (Sr., Huntington, N.Y.) earned third place at 133 pounds after coming all way through the wrestleback by winning five matches on Saturday. His stretch was capped off by a 9-5 win over Justin Colon of Johnson & Wales. Teammate Matt Callari (Jr., Williamsville, N.Y.) won three straight matches, including a pair of major decisions, in the consolation bracket before falling 11-5 to Colon.
Maxx Stratton (Jr., Accord, N.Y.) went 2-1 at 157 pounds with wins of 6-2 and a major decision of 13-2. In the 174-pound weight class, Scott Bova (So., Poughquay, N.Y.) posted three straight wins before being edged out 3-2 in a bout that would have earned him a spot in a placewinning match.
Jacob DeBuyser (Fr., Rochester, N.Y.) recorded a pin in 1:47 over Thiel’s Kevin Heyman in his first Saturday match at 285 pounds. He followed up with a 6-3 win before losing 2-0.
Oswego State hosts RIT in its first dual meet of the season next Saturday at 1 p.m. in Laker Hall.
