OSWEGO COUNTY – Yesterday afternoon, April 17th, 2026, around 1:00 PM an Oswego County Sheriff’s Office investigator was at 90 Tudo Road in the Town of Mexico regarding a newly opened investigation unrelated to animal abuse. While there the investigator saw signs of animal neglect such as dead animals being eaten by other animals and a property littered with garbage, debris, and feces. As a result, he began an animal abuse investigation. Once more investigators arrived on scene, it was determined that the removal of the animals was necessary.
To remove the animals, it was necessary to have a search warrant signed by a judge, so a search warrant was obtained. Meanwhile, investigators contacted local animal welfare organizations for assistance. The Oswego County SPCA, local veterinary offices, and other volunteers offered their assistance with relocating the animals to other properties or to veterinary clinics.
Within a few hours of the original discovery, a search warrant was in hand, and several investigators and over 50 volunteers had rallied and were now at the scene to begin the hard work of trapping, herding, and sometimes chasing down the animals on the property. There were over 150 animals on scene including chickens, ducks, geese, pigs, cats, dogs, cows, goats, sheep, chinchillas, and more. Rescue efforts lasted hours on scene and continued after midnight.
This incident is still under investigation and over the next several days, the animals rescued will be evaluated and relocated. The resident of the property was not home for this operation and charges will be pending.
The Oswego County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Oswego County SPCA, North Country Veterinary Services, Oswego County District Attorney’s Office, Oswego County Fire Coordinators Office, Oswego County Emergency Management Office, and the many volunteers who are not named here for your dedication and swift action.
