OSWEGO –  At 12:16pm today, Emergency crews from the City of Oswego were notified by Oswego County 911 of a person possibly in the water in the Oswego River. Several bystanders reported seeing a person in the water near the Best Western Hotel. Personnel from the City of Oswego Fire Department and Police Department responded immediately to begin rescue efforts.

The Oswego Fire Department immediately deployed personnel aboard Marine One, the department’s water rescue vessel to the Oswego River. Personnel did not locate anyone in the water and continued to scan the area and set up a search grid. A command post was set up near the Oswego River, with Oswego Police Chief Phil Cady and Oswego Fire Department Chief Paul Conzone serving as the Unified incident Commanders. Search efforts were hampered by strong currents in the Oswego River.

With a large area to cover and as the incident expanded, several other resources and agencies assisted in the search efforts. The Oswego Fire Department launched three other vessels and an additional six personnel to the waters of the Oswego River and Harbor, joining the United States Coast Guard and the Oswego County Sherrif’s Department vessels in the search efforts. The City of Oswego drones were deployed, using thermal imaging devices to search for any victims in the water. A helicopter from the New York State Police also assisted in search efforts. The Oswego County Dive Team also responded to the scene, as did the United States Border Patrol, New York State Police, and Menter Ambulance.

At this time, the search efforts have been negative and we have no reports of missing persons. Marine One is still on the water conducting search grid operations, assisted by drone units. Oswego Mayor Rob Corradino applauded the first responders, saying “Exceptional and impressive response by our Police and Firefighters, along with the other agencies that came to the City of Oswego to assist, I really appreciate everyone’s efforts.”
