Leadership Days Allow Mexico Students To Shine

MEXICO – In just a few months, staff members at Mexico Elementary School have seen Student Lighthouse Team members blossom into strong leaders.

That trait was also apparent to guests of the recent student-driven Leadership Day, where Lighthouse Team participants welcomed teachers from other Mexico Academy and Central School District buildings and guided them through all of the Leader in Me-inspired highlights of the hallways, classrooms and special areas.

In small groups, guests listened to how the “7 Habits of Happy Kids” has continued to be a focus for the entire school.

“Being a leader is taking care of people’s stuff, making people happy and caring for others’ feelings,” said Kacee Killam, Student Lighthouse Team member.

She was joined by Jaelyn Mykietyn and Emma Belfield as they accompanied New Haven Elementary School teacher aide Kristen Matteson around.

Matteson said she enjoyed the Leadership Day and wrote down ideas to bring back to her school’s Leadership Day event.

The Leader in Me movement has been embraced by all MACS schools, beginning with leadership introductions and responsibilities in the elementary buildings.

Mexico Elementary Principal Robert Briggs said he has enjoyed watching the SLT students grow and prosper since the team was formed just a few months ago.

What has impressed him the most, he said, was the development of their soft skills: public speaking, confidence, teamwork and problem-solving.

Later in the day, Mexico Elementary hosted its monthly synergy summit where Leadership Day guests and guest speaker Terry Grimshaw, mayor of Mexico, were treated to musical talent of students and a group sing-a-long to Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” tune.

Leadership awards were also distributed to the following students:

Ben Moroz, Makenna Kessler, Jackson Meeks, Jase Howard, Addison Law, Abraham Fleming, Era Callahan, Quinn Sherman, Steven Pitsley, Natalya Stowell, Eli Sheldon, Liam Obleman, Alan Boyea, Nevaeh Canfield, Constance Bateman, Kaylee Grant, Jacob Upcraft, Amelia Patchen, Ian Torrese, Gabriel Torres, Korbyn Adams, Noah Becker, Olivia Buckley, Adriana Maynes, Parker Jock, Emily McCoy, Calum Forbes, Dean Ouderkirk, Izabella Maitland, Katie Edwards, Kaleb DeMarree, MiKayla Towner, Natalie Howard, Trey Eastman, Levi Spataro and Willow Boozer.

Following the Leadership Day, Mexico Elementary School also hosted a Celebration of Learning night, where parents and community members were invited to visit the school to learn more about the building’s leadership process.

Similar events were held at both New Haven and Palermo elementary schools.

Student Lighthouse Teams at each school are also supported by members of a Staff Lighthouse Team, which help guide students along their leadership journey.
