The final test of the purity of carbon dioxide is to taste it. Crystallized CO2 is spooned into a cup of distilled water. If impurities are not visibly present, then the tester will take a drink of the liquid and swish it around in his mouth. If it tastes like fizzy water, and nothing else, it passes.
