Boil Water Order Extended for Scriba Water District Residents

SCRIBA, NORTH VOLNEY AND NEW HAVEN – Residents served by the Town of Scriba Water District are advised by the Oswego County Health Department to continue to boil all water used for drinking and cooking due to water main breaks in the municipal water system earlier this week.

On Tuesday, Jan. 21, the water system lost pressure due to two water main breaks and a boil water order was issued. That order has now been extended until at least Tuesday, Jan. 28.

The Town of Scriba is working to restore service to all residents as soon as possible. Repairs have been completed on the water mains and crews are working to bring back pressure throughout the distribution system.

Once pressure has been fully restored, samples will be collected to confirm there is no contamination in the distribution system. The Health Department will notify residents when they no longer need to boil their water.

The Town of Scriba is asking residents who have already had their water service restored to conserve water until the boil water order has been lifted. This will help pressurize the system and restore service to all residents using the water system.

Until that time, residents affected by the water issues can continue to get drinking water from the following fire stations:

  • Volney Fire Department, 3002 NYS Rte. 3, Fulton, 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
  • Mexico Fire Department, 3284 Main St., Mexico, 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

These locations are outside the Scriba Water District and are unaffected by the boil water order. People should bring their own clean containers to fill up at these fire stations.

At home, residents are advised to bring tap water to a rolling boil, boil for one minute and cool before using. They can also use bottled water certified for sale by the New York State Department of Health.

Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and food preparation until further notice. Boiling kills most bacteria and other organisms in the water.

For more information, contact Town of Scriba Supervisor Kelly Lagoe at 315-343-3019 or the Oswego County Health Department at 315-349-3557.
