OSWEGO COUNTY – According to the Oswego County Health Department, as of 3 p.m., there have been 46 additional cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) since yesterday.
The cumulative reported number is 1,232 cases across the county and of those, 884 have recovered and five have died.
The seven-day rolling average for positive cases in the county is 4.1% as of today, the highest the rate has been in months.
SUNY Oswego reported seven new cases since yesterday.
Oswego County Legislature Chairman James Weatherup posted his weekly video briefing today. In today’s video, he implored Oswego County residents to do their part in preventing the spread of COVID-19 to avoid a shutdown.
“Today’s message is simple. If we don’t get COVID under control in Oswego County, the governor will order a shutdown,” Weatherup said. “If we want to slow the spread of the virus, we need to change our behaviors.”
Within the past 10 days, 21 out of the 24 municipalities in the county saw new positive cases reported, and many of the recent cases were the result of social gatherings.
Weatherup said that the virus is so widespread in CNY that Onondaga County and other county health departments are no longer announcing when a place has had possible public exposure. This week, in Oswego County, the health department has announced potential public exposures at the Oswego Walmart three times, and others at more than a dozen restaurants, stores, social clubs in the county.
“While none of us like government restricting activities in our everyday life, the fact is, we are in an environment where if we all don’t take personal responsibility in protecting ourselves and those around us, orders from higher authority will soon force us into a situation that no one will be happy about,” Weatherup said.
Youth Activities Coordinator Kristin Slimmer joined the video to discuss the Leadership Oswego County Youth Program, which will be completely virtual for the first time ever. It is open to all high school students. Applications and more information can be found here.
Information on testing sites in the county can be found here.
Last night, Oswego Mayor Barlow held a briefing on the virus as well. That story and video can be found here.
Today’s statistics are below:
Oswego County: (as of 3 p.m.) Note, the total number of positive cases is cumulative since March and the number of recoveries and deaths are of those numbers. SUNY Oswego cases are included in the county numbers, however, the county tracks only those living in Oswego County. That means that students who chose to leave and go back to their home county and test positive there will be included on the college’s dashboard, but not the county’s. Their positive result would be reported to their home county, not here.
