OSWEGO COUNTY – According to the Oswego County Health Department, as of 3 p.m., there have been eight additional cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) since yesterday.
The cumulative reported number 577 is cases across the county and of those, 482 have recovered and four have died.
Oswego County Legislature Chairman James Weatherup posted a briefing video today. In the update, he discussed the recent spike in cases at SUNY Oswego.
Last Friday, the college announced it would voluntarily pause in-person instruction for two weeks before it hit the 100-threshold that would cause for the state to mandate them to suspend in-person classes for two weeks. More information can be found here.
“Suspending on-campus activities and taking strong enforcement measures will help slow down the spread of infection,” Weatherup said.
He also discussed the reason for the differences in reported numbers between the county’s dashboard and the college’s dashboard. He said the variation is due to timing and reporting criteria.
“The college dashboard includes all students, including students from different counties,” Weatherup said. “The county’s dashboard includes only those who reside in Oswego County. Students who went to their home county and tested positive in their home county are included in the college’s numbers, but not the county’s.”
Weatherup also said the salmon fishing season has begun and is bringing visitors to Oswego County. He said signage and billboards are being installed to remind anglers to maintain social distance. They are also working with the state Department of Environmental Conservation to share the message of the importance of following the state protective guidelines.
“These rules also apply to visitors who are here for other reasons, whether to work the outage at Nine Mile or attend a wedding or a family event. People who are visiting from restricted states are required to quarantine for 14 days,” Weatherup said. “All businesses should be following the New York state guidance. The only way we are going to get control of this virus is to keep practicing preventative measures – social distance, wear face coverings and follow the other recommendations.”
He ended the update by asking county residents to complete their 2020 census. The deadline is September 30.
