Fulton Drinking Water Passes First Test; Ban Could Be Lifted Tomorrow

Staff report

The city of Fulton reports that tests of municipal water at 16 locations found no contamination from bacteria.  The order to boil water for cooking or drinking remains in effect, however, for at least one more day.

City officials ordered the boil water order Saturday afternoon, after water tests taken Friday showed a low amount of e coli bacteria in one sample, taken at Occhino’s Auto on Route 481.  Officials said at the time that the level was so low that, under older guidelines, the boil water order would not have been required.

Public Works Commissioner Dan O’Brien said in a news release Tuesday afternoon that water samples were taken at 16 locations:

Fulton Mill Apartments
Mimi’s Drive In
Occhino’s Auto
Yager’s Plumbing
Towpath Towers
Oswego County office building
St. Luke’s/Michaud Nursing Home
A. L. Lee Memorial Hospital
All City Wells
OCWA Water Line
Birdseye Foods
Volney Elementary School
Lanigan Elementary School
Granby Elementary School
G. Ray Bodley H.S.
Fulton Jr. High School

The boil water order remains in effect because the state requires two sets of tests to come back clean before the order can be lifted.  O’Brien said water was sampled today from the 16 locations and is being tested at the Oswego County Health Department.

If the new tests show no levels of contamination, the boil water order will end.

In the meantime, city officials urge residents using city water to boil any water intended for consumption for one minute to kill any contamination.
