Well-known bluegrass musician Andy Pawlenko of Hannibal died a year ago. But his daughter doesn’t want his music to ever pass from memory.
Deanna Hubbard of Hannibal has created a CD, called “Out Behind The Barn”, from a recording her father made. She’s selling the disc for $12 through Scott Building Supply in Hannibal, Raby’s Ace Hardware in Oswego and at McCarthy’s tavern on Tallman St. in Oswego. It’s also available on her website, clipclocks.com.

She will donate the proceeds to the Charlie and Mary Haney Cancer Giving Fund of Oswego County, which helps pay for cancer treatments for couonty residents who do not have health insurance.
Andy Pawlenko died last September, age 74. He fought prostate cancer.
But people all over the Northeast knew him as a musician, and leader of the bluegrass outfit “Andy Pawlenko and the Smokey Hollow Boys”. They played festivals all over the region. The band was together for 47 years.
Hubbard said people buying the CD will hear a different side of Pawlenko. The songs feature just him and his guitar. “I had asked him for a tape of just him back in 1998 and now I’m glad I did,” she said.
He sings traditional folk and bluegrass songs, such as “Little Brown Shack Out Back”, “Old Slew Foot” and the title track.
Hubbard said she picked “Out Behind The Barn” because, “it’s one of the ones that he laughs in as he’s singing. My Mom was in the room where he was taping and when he sings, ‘Met a pretty girl once day/Out behind the barn./She wanted me to stay and play/Out behind the barn./She taught me to kiss and pet,/That’s a game I won’t forget./We still play the same game yet!’ He has that mischievous lilt in his voice, so I know there was some eye contact between the two of them.”
