Quirk’s Players of G. Ray Bodley High School are placing finishing touches on their spring, 2010 musical – Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein II’s classic, The Sound of Music. The production will run Thursday, March 4th through Saturday, March 6th, 2010 and will be presented in Fulton’s G. Ray Bodley High School Auditorium. There will be four performances; curtain time is set for 7:30 P.M. each evening with a 2:00 P.M. matinee on Saturday as well.
Fulton students have been working diligently on this year’s musical for several months. “Shortly after our fall play in November we had our interest meeting. After that we held auditions in December, cast the show and began working on the production before the holidays,†explained Rob Lescarbeau, assistant director. “After we returned from Christmas vacation, students have been rehearsing six days a week. The schedule can be a bit demanding at times,†Lescarbeau said.
The Sound of Music is a well-known stage musical, but differs from traditional shows in some ways. “Unlike other stage musicals, there are no large full-cast musical numbers,†explained Tom Nami, music director for Quirk’s Players. “Rather, each group of characters is highlighted in different songs and in different scenes.â€Â
Nami explained that large group of nuns from Nonnberg Abbey, “have some of the most beautiful music in the show. They sing four wonderful Latin pieces in four-part harmony and one Latin piece in six-part harmony. It adds such a richness to the production.†Nami also explained that the stage version of The Sound of Music differs slightly from the movie version. “Some of the songs people are familiar with appear in different scenes on stage than they do in the movie,†he stated. For example, in the movie version Maria sings “My Favorite Things†to the Von Trapp Children in the midst of a thunderstorm. The song appears in the stage version, but is sung between Maria and the Mother Abbess at the convent. In the stage version Maria sings “The Lonely Goatherd†to the Von Trapp Children to help them forget about the thunderstorm.
Nami also explained that Quirk’s Players is able to add two additional songs to their production. “Through our license agreement with the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization, we have contracted to add two pieces that were written specifically for the movie version.†He explained that the Fulton students will include the songs “I Have Confidence†which is sung by Maria on her way to the Von Trapp Villa, and “Something Good†which is sung by Maria and Capt. Von Trapp in Act II. “Both were written for the movie,†Nami explained. “We are happy to have permission to include them in our production.â€Â
As Quirk’s Players prepare for opening night, last minute details are being addressed. “We have put up our backdrops, decorated the lobby, printed the program, tried on costumes and cued the light board. Things are in place and we are ready for opening night,†assistant director Lescarbeau stated. “Our students have worked very hard and are sure to make the community proud as they bring this classic Broadway musical to life.â€Â
