FULTON, NY – Fulton veterans reminded everyone of the meaning of today’s holiday.
Garry Visconti, president of Fulton Veteran’s Council, headed the Memorial Day Ceremony this year at Fulton Veterans’ Park.
“All I can ask of you,” said Visconti, “is to think of our veterans. The time is coming that we are losing our older generation, people that played a very important part in American history. We must always remember the veterans, the many people that died protecting our American flag.”
As a retired Aviation Ordinance Chief, Viscontihas a firsthand account of life as a military member.
“I always hear people talk bad about our city, and our country. You really don’t realize what we have here unless you’ve traveled to these other countries and seen what we’ve seen,” he said. “Our veterans have died for our freedoms, think of them.”
Fulton Mayor Ronald Woodward Sr. alongside Veteran of the Year 2015 John Young and veteran Alan DeLine, Fulton Fire/Police Commissioner placed the wreath in honor of our fallen soldiers.
“On behalf of the Fulton Common Council, I sincerely thank you for your service. God bless you all, and God Bless America,” said Mayor Woodward.
A gun salute took place and a ribbon was thrown into the Oswego River in honor of those who died at sea.
A veteran speaker added, “As times change, it seems the reason behind Memorial Day gets lost as well. So, on this day, please take a minute during your barbeque to remember.”
The Polish Home generously provided a luncheon to the veterans and the public; serving food and cake and honoring all our military members.
