OSWEGO – Firefighters in Oswego responded to a multiple-family house fire in the early morning hours today (Oct. 24).

The fire at 96 W. Sixth St., Oswego, was called in by a neighbor who could see flames visible from the exterior of the building.

Three of the five apartments were occupied by tenants at the time of the fire.

Five people, from two of the apartments, were able to escape after being alerted by police officers.

One man, Edward Babcock, 54, was unable to evacuate his apartment and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Those individuals who were displaced are being helped by the American Red Cross.

OSWEGO – Firefighters in Oswego responded to a fire in a multiple-family home on the city’s west side overnight.

Firefighters arrived on scene (96 W. Sixth St.) within minutes of the call for help around 1 a.m. today (Oct. 24).

On arrival, firefighters encountered intense fire from a second-floor apartment on West Sixth Street near Bridge Street.

Five people were able to escape the fire.

One victim, an adult male, was not able to evacuate in time and was found dead in his apartment.

Oswego Fire and Police departments were assisted at the scene by Menter Ambulance and the Oswego County Fire Coordinator’s Office.

Scriba and Oswego Town fire departments stood by for Oswego Fire.

The American Red Cross is helping those who were displaced by the fire.

The fire remains under investigation and the identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of his next of kin.

This is an ongoing investigation.
