FCSD BOE Discusses Spring Sports, Read To Them Program

FULTON – The Fulton City School District Board of Education met last night, Tuesday, June 14, when it discussed spring sports and the district wide reading program.

Before the meeting began, Chief of Operations and Finance Dr. Dominick Lisi led an overview of the 2022-2023 district safety plan, which can be read in full here.

Goals and objectives of this plan include to meet or exceed state requirements, prevent and/or minimize effects of serious violent events and emergencies, coordinate with local and county resources, and to meet Safe Schools Against Violence in Education law requirements.

“Emergency planning and safety and security are paramount of our work and we look forward to any feedback that you have as the best security is all working together to focus on the safety of all our students and staff each and every day,” Pulvino said.

The BOE meeting began later. During the President’s report, Board President Robbin Griffin presented a certificate of appreciation to Reagan LaPage, the student representative on the board. LaPage graduates high school this month.

As the meeting also took place on Flag Day, Griffin shared some facts about the nation’s flag to recognize the holiday. The board also approved during the president’s report two Gaylord Chauncy Scholarships to be received by Alexis Ingersoll and Christina Tallents in the amount of $125 each.

Moving on to the Superintendent’s report, Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics Christopher Ells along with two student athletes recapped the spring sports season.

  • Softball: A total of 49 students participated in varsity, junior varsity and modified teams.
  • Baseball: A total of 42 students participated in varsity, junior varsity and modified teams.
  • Outdoor track and field: A total of 73 students participated in varsity and modified teams.
  • Boys tennis: Ten students participated
  • Boys lacrosse: A total of 69 students participated in varsity, junior varsity and modified teams.
  • Girls lacrosse: A total of 46 students participated in varsity, junior varsity and modified teams. Won Section III Championship and were NYS Semi Finalists.

All teams were Scholar Athletes this season.

Also during the superintendent’s report, Director of Literacy and UPK Renee Hendrickson and English teacher Michelle Klatt presented on the district’s Read to Them program.

Leading up to the reveal of the district-wide book for this year, students and families were given hints and clues to see if they could guess the book, “Nim’s Island” by Wendy Orr. Each member of the board was given a copy of the book with a schedule of activities for families while reading it. Painted rocks will also be placed around the city for families to find.

The board then moved on to approving all items on the agenda. One of the items approved on the agenda included appointing two new administrators – Shannon Babbie as the new director of human resources and Desiree Saladin as the new director of special education. The board also appointed several new positions.
