Fees Go Up Today For Vehicle Registrations, Licenses

The cost of driving went up while you slept.

The fee charged for every vehicle registration and license rose effective today. And soon, you’ll be forced to get a new license plate and pay extra to keep your current license plate number.

A motor vehicle registration now costs $55. Yesterday, the cost was $44. Today, the eight-year renewal of your driver’s license will cost $62.50, up from $50 yesterday. The two increases will add about $80,000 to the state’s revenues — a tiny drop in the bucket of a multi-billion dollar deficit, which was the reason for increasing these fees.

Next April, you’ll have to get a new license plate. The state claims the reflective material on the current plates is wearing out. You’ll pay $25 for your new plates, up from $15. And if you want to keep your current license plate number, it’ll be 20 bucks more.

There is also a higher price for one of the state’s Enhanced Driver Licenses, which have the extra information embedded in them to allow you to cross the border into Canada. The new cost is $93.75, up from $75 yesterday.

“People are getting hit every step of the way,” said Buffalo area Republican State Senator George Maziarz in a news release complaining about the increases. “People ask me ‘when is it going to stop?”

  1. Maybe now they can afford to put glue on them that will make them stick to the window.

  2. People that is less than $9 a year for something you use every day! and the $55 for the car reg is for two years!!! I see it was ok for for them to make pay hkes in 1992 when Pataki was in Albany!! Oh wait he was a republican that is right! so it was ok! ( i believe that is when the county use tax was implemented as well!) But now that a Democrat has done this it is wrong right GEORGE!!! The good old boys wont ever change

  3. Get a grip. Obama isn’t the one that jammed it up our collective butts. Look around. Ever since Pataki clobbered us with a huge deficit we’ve had Spitzer, who wanted to play Clinton in the White House and Paterson, who has slammed us with every tax and levy he can think of to pay off the debts. Where did you EVER get the idea that Obama would have ANY sway over the Department of Motor Vehicles in New York State? Good grief!

  4. A fee increase on cars is a tax on Upstate, where we need our cars and trucks to survive!
These fee hikes are just one of the new taxes approved by Darrel Aubertine and the NYC Democrats! Enough is enough. Tell Darrel Aubertine to stop voting for tax increases. We can’t afford it!
