Friends of Fulton Parks Hosts Annual Canal Clean Sweep

Friends of Fulton Parks hosted the fourth Canal Clean Sweep in the city of Fulton.

FULTON, NY – Friends of Fulton Parks announces participation in the 13th annual Canal Clean Sweep on April 21.

Statewide “Spring Cleaning” activities are planned along the New York State Canal System.

In recognition of Earth Day 2018 and in preparation for the 194th consecutive navigation season on the New York State Canal System, the New York State Canal Corporation is partnering with Parks & Trails New York to sponsor the 13th Annual Canal Clean Sweep during the weekend of April 20 – 22.

As part of this multi-community celebration, Friends of Fulton Parks will host the first of its annual Earth Month Sparkle-a-Park cleanups at Veterans’ Park and Towpath Trail, on April 21 from 10 a.m. to noon.

Volunteers will meet at the gazebo on South First Street and Canal Street, Fulton, for sign-in, coffee, supplies, and a group photo.

From there, organizers will lead groups to clean up between the gazebo and the Fulton Public Library.

One group will pick up litter along the Oswego River Towpath Trail.

A second group will clean up Veterans’ Park, a narrow strip of greenspace along South First Street, next to the Fulton Public Library.

All children must be accompanied by an adult. For safety, volunteers should wear sneakers or boots, and work gloves.

A collection truck will be parked near Veterans’ Park for public donations of redeemable cans and bottles to fund park benches.

Canal Clean Sweep highlights the growing significance of the Canal System and the Canalway Trail System as a recreational and tourism destination across the state and here in Fulton.

Community organizations, service groups, municipalities, and businesses across the New York State Canal System are participating in Canal Clean Sweep, hosting more than 100 local clean-up activities in Canalside parks and other community spaces, and on their local Canalway Trail segments.

The New York State Canal System is comprised of four waterways, the Erie, the Champlain, the Oswego and the Cayuga-Seneca Canals, spanning 524 miles across New York State.

Every season is special on such a historic and cherished system, but this year’s spring cleaning has added significance as it coincides with the second year of the Erie Canal Bicentennial era, and the Centennial year of the modernization of the canal system with the construction of the New York State Barge Canal.

Clean Sweep events on the Erie and Champlain Canalway Trails, the multi-use paths that parallel these two historic waterways, will also take on a celebratory air, with the 2017 announcement that the remaining unfinished “gap” sections will be closed by 2020 as part of the larger Empire State Trail project.

That means Clean Sweep volunteers will be preparing their trails and communities for cyclists and other visitors from around the world.

Parks and Trails New York is the state’s leading non-profit advocate for enhancing the health and quality of life of New Yorkers through maintenance, enhancement and promotion of New York’s network of parks and multi-use trails.
