FULTON – The Fulton City School District Board of Education met virtually last night, Tuesday, November 23, and discussed the local Blessings in a Backpack program as well as other updates within the district.

The full meeting can be viewed here.

Superintendent Brian Pulvino began his report by recognizing district teachers, teaching assistants and its technology team.

“They go above and beyond each and every day whether it’s on kids that are struggling academically, socially, emotionally, they’re there,” Pulvino said. “You truly make a difference and I’m eternally grateful and honored to serve with you and beside you.”

Susan and Craig Traub from Fulton’s Blessings in a Backpack reflected on its involvement in caring for 230 of the district’s elementary students while they were all learning from home. Golden Sun buses delivered these meal bags directly to the homes of these children each Friday.

“This year we’re back to a more regular program where the buses are picking up the totes and meal bags on Tuesday and they’re going out, being distributed out by the schools and the teachers on Friday,” Craig Traub said. “We are doing 240 meal bags this year.”

Susan Traub said they would like to increase that number, but they face a limitation in storage and supplies. She said while they are not having a hard time delivering the food to the schools, this year they are challenged with the problem of getting the food, specifically a large quantity of applesauce cups from Save A Lot.

“Nobody has had an empty bag this year, so we’re grateful and thankful for that,” Susan said.

She said they try to include a fruit in each child’s bag each week. She asked if it would be possible for the district to donate applesauce cups each week to help with this problem. Craig also asked if liaison teachers could get feedback from the students to see if they like the items that are included in their bags.

Monetary donations can be made out to Blessings in a Back Chapter #1764. Checks can be sent to Prince of Peace Church at 64 Gillespie Road, Fulton, New York. More information on how to help out can be found on their Facebook page.

The board discussed different fundraising ideas to help the program.

Superintendent Pulvino, Executive Director of Instruction and Achievement Daniel Carroll, and Instructional Coach Renee Hendrickson then gave a presentation on the leadership aspect of the district’s strategic coherence plan.

Pulvino then gave an overview of the timeline for the 2022-2023 annual budget vote and BOE election.

Director of Finance Kathy Nichols then presented the October financial report.

Next, Pulvino gave a report on the district’s capital project and an update on COVID-19 testing in the district.

He talked about a recent pediatric vaccination clinic held at G. Ray Bodley High School. He said the waiting area following the vaccine had various activities for the children and their families to decompress. In regards to testing, Lanigan Elementary now has a functional testing room. He said he believes the district is off to a good start.

The board then moved on to the agenda. The next scheduled meeting is Tuesday, December 14 at 6:30 p.m. It can be viewed on the Fulton Communications YouTube channel.
