FULTON — N.E.T. & Die of Fulton New York, a third-generation family-owned machine shop, recently donated $10,000 to benefit the ALS Association of Upstate New York. The donation — which more than doubled the company’s fundraising goal — was made in honor of 25-year company employee Nelson Walter, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2014 and passed in 2018.
“As the new owner of N.E.T. and Die, I feel it is important that I use this platform to give back to our community and to those who have given so much to our company,” said Michelle Shatrau, president and CEO. “Nelson was a much-loved member of the N.E.T. family, and we take great joy in keeping his memory alive and helping the ALS Association further their cause.”
Walter was a quality inspector at N.E.T. & Die for a quarter-century. He was a prankster who loved Elvis and his family. He was an avid golfer and bowler, loved to pitch horseshoes, and sing at karaoke events.
The N.E.T. & Die First annual Nelson Walter Memorial Golf Tournament, which was held September 18 at Emerald Crest Golf Course in Fulton, saw 88 people/22 teams play 18 holes of golf while benefiting the ALS Association’s mission to “discover treatments and a cure for ALS, and to serve, advocate for, and empower people affected by ALS to live their lives to the fullest.” Players included N.E.T. & Die employees and vendors, and was also open to the public.
“We are honored to have the support of N.E.T & Die,” said Elizabeth Krisanda, executive director of The ALS Association Upstate New York Chapter. “That the first annual golf tournament more than doubled its initial fundraising goal — an incredible feat given the current limitations imposed by COVID-19 — is a testament to the passion and dedication of a local business supporting the needs of their community. The Upstate New York Chapter serves nearly 400 families facing the daily challenges of living with ALS. We simply couldn’t do the work we do without the hard work and support from business leaders like Michelle Shatrau and her amazing staff.”
Event sponsors included Romano of Syracuse (who donated a VW Jetta for a hole-in-one contest), C&S Companies, Dominick Falcone Agency, and Universal Metal Works. Every golfer took home an ALS Association lunch bag with sponsored golf balls, polos donated by Printing & Promotional Solutions, and other goodies.
The winning team of P.J. Rutledge, Bob O’Connor, Randy Kitts, and Tom Pryor took home $100 each.
N.E.T. & Die plans to hold its second annual Nelson Walter Memorial Golf Tournament in September 2021.
