Fulton Man Arrested arrested for Grand Larceny and Endangering the Welfare of a Child after pursuit

New York State Police

OSWEGO COUNTY – On June 16, 2024, at 6:26 p.m., State Police in Fulton responded to the Kwik Fill gas station located 2718 State Route 3 town of Volney for report of a harassment.

A preliminary investigation revealed Ronald C. Canfield Jr, age 35, from Fulton drove erratically into the gas station behind a vehicle as they were pumping gas. Canfield jumped into the driver’s seat in an attempt to steal the vehicle which was occupied with a one-year-old child in the back-passenger seat. Canfield then realized that there were no keys in the ignition, so he fled the scene in his previous vehicle on Weller Road.

Shortly after this incident, at about 6:29 p.m., a Trooper observed a gray Mazda failing to stop at a stop sign on Weller Road in the town of Fulton. The Trooper attempted to stop the vehicle, however the driver (Canfield) refused to pull over and a traffic pursuit was initiated. Canfield then pulled into the Fastrac located at 343 State Route 264 and fled on foot.  Following a short foot chase, and taser usage by the Trooper, Canfield was taken into custody without further incident. Canfield was transported to Oswego Hospital where he was treated and released.

Canfield was transported and processed at SP Fulton where he was issued traffic tickets and charged with Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle (class “A” Misdemeanor), Reckless Driving, Resisting Arrest (Class “A” Misdemeanor), and Obstruct Governmental Administration (class “A” Misdemeanor) Attempted Grand Larceny 4th (Class “E” Felony), and Endangering the Welfare of a Child (Class “A” Misdemeanor).

Canfield was transported to Oswego County Jail pending arraignment.
