FULTON, NY – Former Fulton Police Chief Walter Hanlon passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, October 24, 2018.

Hanlon, 81, had a long period of declining health, FPD Investigator Michael Curtis said.

According to his wife, Carolyn, Hanlon was checked in to Crouse Hospital in Syracuse on October 16 where he remained until the morning of October 24, when he was brought home.

Hanlon died that night. Carolyn said her husband was smiling the day he was brought home as if “this was where he wanted to be.”

Per his request, Hanlon will not have public services.

Members of FPD and the Fulton community are mourning the loss of the lifetime Fulton resident and former public servant.

Curtis described Hanlon as a “very personable, community oriented” person who was always with his beloved wife of 59 years.

Hanlon’s more than thirty year career with the Fulton Police Department began in 1958.

“Walt (Hanlon) started his career on 10/20/1958 and served during portions of five decades until his retirement in 1992. During that time he held the positions of Patrolman, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain and Chief,” Inv. Curtis said.

Hanlon served in the capacity of Police Chief from June 1978 through his retirement in January 1992.
