Fulton schoolchildren will soon have an opportunity to be vaccinated against the H1N1 virus.
The school district sent letters home with elementary school students Tuesday and mailed letters to families of secondary students announcing H1N1 vaccination clinics, to be run in coordination with the Oswego County Health Department.
The clinics will dispense the vaccine in shot form, though if nasal mist vaccine arrives in time, it will be available as well.
Clinics for elementary students will take place on December 2 and 3, with clinics for the junior high, universal pre-K, high school and BOCES programs on December 9.
The clinics are only for students, and only for those students whose parents or guardians complete a permission form.
“It’s a good opportunity for families in our community,” said Bill Lynch, superintendent of schools.
The outbreak of H1N1 appears to be easing in local schools after a strong start that pushed absences above 20% in some schools. Health officials believe the virus may come back over the winter.
H1N1 appears to produce more severe illness in young people, along with the elderly and those who have other medical problems.
