Starting Monday, you’ll have to press a buzzer button to get into one of the Fulton City School District buildings.
The school district is making the changes as a result of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre. Because of “the heightened concern of parents,” said Superintendent of Schools Bill Lynch, “we think it’s prudent to implement another layer of security.”
The buzzer system will replace the current system, in which visitors to school buildings check in with a greeter, who signs them in and issues them a visitor’s badge.
All school doors will be locked during school hours.
The new procedure covers the hours when school is in session. Buildings will be more open during after-school hours, for sports, community and club practices and events.
“All aspects of safety and security can be inconvenient,” Lynch said. “But the sense is to have a safer environment.
“It is a layer of security,” Lynch said, but warned, “It is just a layer.”
Letters discussing the change will be sent home to parents on Friday.
