GRANBY, NY – Even with clouds overhead, the Granby Community Center was the place to be this weekend.
Between face-painting, horseback rides, old-fashioned popcorn, tie-dying, a visit from Trooper canine Doyle, cotton candy, and a performance by Jeff the Magic Man, there was something for the whole family to enjoy.
“It’s been steady, and lots of kids,” said Town Clerk Janet Ingersoll who was serving up cotton candy with Town Historian John Snow.
“The kids and the grownups enjoyed themselves,” said Supervisor Ed Williamson of the event. “It’s always a friendly event. There’s never any arguing, the children always behave and they enjoy themselves.”
Also part of the afternoon was the presentation of Citizen of Year award. This year’s recipients were Anne Marie and Dave Lepage.
The Lepages have been involved with the Town of Granby since they moved here more than 12 years ago.
“It’s an honor,” said Anne Marie. “We really love our town.”
Together they own G&C Foods, are involved with local government, and make donations to local organizations such as Fulton Youth Basketball, as well as helping out families in need at Christmas time.
“I’ve been on the planning board 12 years,” said Anne Marie. “And he’s on the Lake Neatahwanta Committee.”
“Through our company we’ve donated food to events like this,” Dave added.
“They’re excellent. They do so much for everything in the town,” said Supervisor Williamson. “They do a lot for the fire departments, for needy children. They’re just wonderful people.”
“We aren’t the citizens of the year,” said Anne Marie. “The first responders are citizens of the year; the firemen, the police and paramedics.”
Jeff the Magic Man was also a big draw for the event. The entertainer performed a series of magic tricks that brought wonder and awe to the audience.
“I like when he transforms balloons into animal balloons,” said 5-year-old Mason. “And his hat.”
Mason called the show “Awesome!” and also took advantage of the entire afternoon, eating popcorn and bouncing in the jump house.
“It was cool and I had some kids to play with, too,” said Mason.
And, when asked what his favorite part of Family Fun Day was he declared, “All of it!”
Supervisor Williamson said the event was “Excellent. It increases generally in people each year. We try keep different acts and fun things that the kids can enjoy.”
Despite a rainy start the turnout was “Very good,” said Williamson. “I’d say better than last year.”
