Hannibal school officials will tell the public tonight (Wednesday, September 9) how it plans to handle any outbreak of H1N1 flu this year.
The public meeting begins at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday in the high school auditorium.
The district will outline its plan for communicating during any outbreak, tell parents what they can do to help stop the spread of the flu and discuss the steps the district will take to keep flu from spreading.
H1N1 is a fast-moving flu virus. School has just begun at Cornell University in Ithaca, for example, and the university is already dealing with an outbreak of H1N1 and nearly 300 cases of flu in the last week. Experts say the H1N1 virus appears to spread many times faster than other flu viruses.
Because it is a new virus, bodies have not built up a natural immunity to it. And a vaccine for H1N1 is not expected to be ready for several more months, well after the virus’s fall outbreak is expected to be in full swing.
